The principles of homeopathy

The word homeopathy is derived from two Greek words, homoios, meaning like or similar, and pathos, meaning suffering. Placed together in “homeopathy” they indicate “like suffering”, which summarises one fundamental scientific theory - the law of similars:
those symptoms a medicinal substance can produce when administered to a healthy person are the very symptoms it can cure in a sick person.

Anyone who has sliced onions knows of the coryza-like symptoms which inevitably result. Allium cepa – the red onion – is an excellent remedy for the typical winter cold with copious, watery and acrid nasal discharge and congested, watery eyes with recurrent sneezing.

Every illness has a common symptom picture which helps in the classification and diagnosis of disease. However, in homoeopathy, it is recognised that individuals will react differently when exposed to the same disease, according to their susceptibility. Because illness is understood as a multi-dimensional phenomenon it manifests in each person in a uniquely characteristic way. That is why homeopathy aims to treat the patient as an individual rather than a condition. Details like the type of e.g. pain, its location, its cause, but also personality, lifestyle, history of illness and family history are taken into account to find the most suitable remedy for that person.
For this reason, 5 patients suffering with headache are unlikely to be prescribed the same medicine.

Homeopathic remedies are completely natural and can be made from the following sources:
• Botanical substances (e.g. Arnica, Calendula)
• Animal substances (e.g. poison of bees, spiders, snakes)
• Chemical elements and minerals ( e.g. gold, Calcium carbonicum)
• Biological sources – both healthy (Sarcodes)and unhealthy (Nosodes) tissue
• Synthetic substances

We get the knowledge about the remedies from a so called proving – it is conducted according to scientific procedures of double-blind, cross over, control trials on healthy individuals. The most characteristic, unique and peculiar symptoms differentiate the remedy as a curative force and guide the homeopath in its accurate application to the appropriate patient. Clinical experience will confirm and deepen this knowledge.

As some of the substances Hahnemann used were quite toxic (e.g. Arsenic, Mercury) he started to dilute them to reduce side effects. His method of serial dilution and succession (vigorous shaking) is still used today to produce more powerful, dynamic remedies. The dynamization process reveals a substance’s hidden medical power and enables the stimulation of the vital force on an energetic level to restore its balance.

Like any science homoeopathy is based on natural laws and is not subject to change or affected by the latest fads or theories. Like the Law of Gravity they remain unchanged.

„Homeopathy cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond all doubt safer, more economical and the most complete medical science”.
Mahatma Gandhi
