Ear acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture is a diagnostic and treatment system based on normalizing the body's dysfunction through stimulation of points on the ear. Resulting amelioration of pain and illness is believed to be through the reticular formation and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Rudimentary forms of acupuncture which probably arose during the Stone Age have survived in many parts of the world right down to present day. It was used in the ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece and all the Mediterranean area. It is a micro acupuncture technique and was first described in France in 1950 by Paul Nogier who is considered the Father of modern ear acupuncture. Dr Nogier’s research indicated that there are over 100 separate acupuncture points on the external ear and that they influence various organs and systems in the body when being stimulated. He discovered that the position of the ear points and the zones were approximately in the position of an upside down foetus with the head located around the lobe of the ear.

It is not clear how exactly it works; basically there are groups of pluripotent cells found on the ear containing information from the whole organism and creating regional organization centres; they represent specific areas of the body. Thus stimulation of a reflex point in the ear can relieve symptoms of distant pathology with a reliable duration. Modern research is confirming the efficacy of ear acupuncture for analgesia and anxiety related disease.

Ear acupuncture is a quick and reliable form of therapy for acute and chronic cases. It is a great tool to be used alongside other therapies in terms of
• pain management
• allergies
• anxiety related illnesses
• skin problems
• high blood pressure
• tobacco dependence, weight loss
• before and after operations to reduce inflammation, bleeding, pain

It needs to be applied with caution when one of the following conditions is present:
• pregnancy
• menstruation
• blood clotting problem
• emergency (e.g. Appendicitis)
• illnesses like epilepsy, HIV, hepatitis

“Auricular acupuncture is probably the most developed and best documented, scientifically, of all the Microsystems of acupuncture and is the most practical and widely used.”
